ECO HEROES FROM TYROL: BEAN GLASSES WIN THE EUROPEAN GREEN AWARD

In April, Tyrolean eyewear manufacturers Rolf received the European Green Award Gold Trophy from the European Institute of Applied Sustainability for their glasses made out of beans. The reason was simple: not only are their latest plant-based bean glasses produced locally and in an environmentally friendly way in the Tyrolean valley of Lechtal, they are also made from a raw material that regrows incredibly quickly: a species of the Euphorbiaceae family. What’s more, thanks to 3D printing and the patented Flexlock hinge, the glasses don’t have any screws and are therefore long-lasting and low-maintenance. Even if the glasses do reach the end of their lifespan, they can be put back into the cycle and reused.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY MEETS HIGH-END DESIGN

For the past ten years, ROLF SPECTACLES has been building a reputation for upscale designs blended with natural materials. The brand based in the Tyrol region of Austria serves allergy-friendly frames crafted from wood, stone, and horn that have won several of the eyewear industry’s highest merits, including the iF Design Award. As the driving force, the label points to a forward-looking brand philosophy: “Our mission is to create groundbreaking innovations, set new trends and through it all remain true to our roots!”
