Why we wear beans on our nose

How a sustainable pair of glasses is made from a castor bean.

Kurier investigated this unusual question – and discovered a story that shows how a new understanding of eyewear design can emerge from beans. The article takes a look at materials, processes and ideas that you wouldn’t immediately expect: plant-based raw materials, modern 3D printing technology and a robustness that seems almost contradictorily light. A read full of little surprises.

Our glasses made from beans take center stage. They don’t grow in the traditional sense – but they start with a raw material that comes from nature: the powder of the castor bean. In Tyrol, we use it to create frames that are made up of just three parts and still have everything that eyewear should be able to do today: Lightness, flexibility, stability. The screwless FlexLock joint is printed at the same time and is the reason why the bean glasses can withstand so much. You can bend them, strain them, drop them – and they will return to their original shape.

The courier particularly emphasizes how naturally sustainability and suitability for everyday use are combined: A material that conserves resources. Production that leaves hardly any waste. A form that remains minimalist – and therefore timeless.

And therein lies the core: our bean glasses are not loud. They work through simplicity. Through their natural texture. Through an expression that shows attitude without demanding attention. Sustainable, plant-based glasses that are more than just a technical experiment – they are a statement for a different way of thinking.

If you want to delve deeper, you can find the whole story in the Kurier article: from the initial idea to the moments when you forget that you are wearing glasses at all.

A calm, clear view of what becomes possible when you think design, nature and innovation together.
